Microphone off

How it works

01

Turn on the microphone

Your browser asks once. A level meter shows what it hears, so you can move closer or further away before you start.

02

Record

Press Record, speak, sing or play, and press Stop. Up to 15 minutes per recording.

03

Listen and save

Play it back and download it as an uncompressed WAV, or take it straight into the SoundGen studio.

Questions

Is my recording uploaded?
No. The audio is captured and turned into a WAV inside your browser tab. It only leaves your device if you choose to save it to a SoundGen library.
What quality does it record at?
Every sample the microphone delivers, at your device's sample rate (usually 44.1 or 48 kHz), saved as a 16-bit WAV with no compression. Stereo if your microphone or interface provides two channels, mono otherwise.
What does "voice call processing" do?
It turns on the browser's echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain, the same processing a video call uses. It can help with a noisy room on a laptop mic, but it colours music and singing, so it is off by default. For background noise after the fact, try the free AI Noise Reducer.
Why is the meter red?
The input reached full scale and the recording clipped, which sounds like crackle. Move further from the microphone or turn its input level down in your system's sound settings, then record again.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in current Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Keep the page open in front while recording; mobile browsers may stop the microphone when you switch apps.
