How it works

01

Drop in a recording

A sung melody, a bass line, a guitar riff or a synth part. One instrument at a time works best.

02

It listens for notes

A neural pitch model (Basic Pitch) runs on your own device, finds each note's pitch, start and length, and estimates the tempo.

03

Download the .mid

Open it in any DAW — Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, GarageBand — or in the SoundGen studio, and pick the instrument that plays it.

Questions

Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on files. The conversion runs on your computer, so it costs us nothing to run.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is decoded and transcribed inside your browser tab and never leaves your device.
What audio works best?
One instrument playing one line: vocals, bass, lead synth or a solo guitar part. Keep it dry; heavy reverb smears notes together. Simple chords come through too, with some cleanup.
Can it convert a full song or drums?
A full mix has every instrument at once, so the result is messy. Split the song into stems first and convert one part. Drums are not pitched, so this tool will not read them; the SoundGen studio's assistant can transcribe drum hits.
How long can the file be?
Up to 5 minutes per file. Longer files are cut to the first 5 minutes so the conversion finishes on any laptop.

Edit the notes.
Then finish the song.

In the SoundGen studio, Convert to MIDI drops the notes straight into a piano roll beside your audio, and you can split full songs into stems first.
