How it works
01
Enter a key
Type it as you have it (F#m, G♭ minor, C major, 8A, or Traktor's 1d) or click its slot on the wheel.
02
Read the matches
The same code, one step either way round the wheel, and its relative major or minor. These share six or seven of their notes, so they blend.
03
Plan the set
Move one step at a time to keep a mix smooth. Switch on energy boosts to see the bigger jumps DJs use on purpose.
Questions
- What is the Camelot wheel?
- A circle of fifths renumbered for DJs by Mark Davis and popularised by Mixed In Key. Each major key gets a number 1–12 with B, its relative minor the same number with A. Keys next to each other on the wheel are musically related, so mixing between them sounds in key.
- Which keys are harmonically compatible?
- From any code: the same code, the codes one number higher and lower with the same letter, and the same number with the other letter (the relative major or minor). From 8A (A minor) that is 8A, 9A (E minor), 7A (D minor) and 8B (C major).
- What is an energy boost?
- A deliberate key change: +2 on the wheel raises the key by a whole tone and +7 by a semitone. It lifts the energy of a set but is audible as a change, so time it to a breakdown or drop.
- What is Open Key notation?
- Traktor's version of the same idea, numbered from C major (1d) with d for major and m for minor. 8B in Camelot is 1d in Open Key; the wheel here shows both.
- How do I find a song's key?
- Use the free Key, BPM & Chord Finder: drop in the track and it reads the key, which you can then enter here.
