If you want a song out and working for you before Christmas, the deadline isn't in December. It's in the first half of November. Most independent artists find that out the week they hit "upload". Here's the timeline counted back from release day, using what the platforms themselves publish.
Why December releases are front-loaded
Holiday listening builds through the month. Luminate reports that holiday music grows from modest numbers to more than 10% of US on-demand audio streaming in its peak week near Christmas. A holiday song released on December 22 catches only the tail of that curve. One released at the start of the month rides all of it.
Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Counting back from there gives three sensible release Fridays: December 4, 11 and 18. December 4 gets the most of the season.
The rule Spotify actually publishes
Spotify for Artists states it plainly: pitch an unreleased song at least 7 days before its release date, and it goes into your followers' Release Radar playlists. Pitching to editorial playlists doesn't guarantee a placement, but Release Radar is the part you can count on, and you only get it if the song is pitched in time.
Two more details from the same help page:
- You can pitch one song at a time. If you have a single and a B-side, pick one.
- You can edit the pitch until release day, but there's no guarantee editors see the changes. Get it right the first time.
To pitch, the song has to already be in Spotify's system. That means your distributor has to deliver it first.
The distributor's lead time
Delivery to stores isn't instant, and the timing varies by service. In a guest post for Berklee Online, DistroKid advises uploading two to four weeks before your release date, which also leaves room for Spotify's pre-release tools. Holiday weeks are busy for distributors and stores alike, so aim for the long end.
The timeline, counted back
For a Friday, December 4 release:
| When | What |
|---|---|
| By Friday, November 6 | Master finished, artwork done, uploaded to your distributor (4 weeks out) |
| By Friday, November 20 | Song visible in Spotify for Artists under Upcoming; pitch submitted |
| Friday, November 27 | Last day the 7-day rule allows (Black Friday, so don't leave it this late) |
| Friday, December 4 | Release |
For December 11 or 18, add one or two weeks to each date. If it's already past November 6 for your plan, push the release back rather than skipping the pitch.
The pre-flight check (do this before you upload)
A rejected or re-delivered release costs you the time you don't have in November. Run these checks first. Each tool is free and runs in your browser:
- Loudness and true peak. Run the master through the loudness meter. Spotify normalises to −14 LUFS by default and asks for true peak below −1 dBTP, or below −2 dBTP for masters louder than −14 LUFS.
- Clean edges. Trim dead air at the start, and fade the tail properly, with the audio trimmer. A silent second before the first note is a second of a listener's patience.
- Key and tempo for your metadata and pitch. Get them from the key and BPM finder. Editors are reading hundreds of pitches, so precise descriptors help yours.
- Noise on spoken intros or vocals. Clean it with the noise reducer.
- Rights. If any part was AI-generated, check you can release it. SoundGen's Terms, section 4, license generated audio for releasing and monetizing on streaming platforms, on any credits, with no subscription. If you used another tool, read its terms before you upload, not after.
No song yet?
Two weeks is enough for an original holiday single if you start now. Make an Original Christmas Song This Weekend walks through writing, generating and finishing one, and the Studio's AI tools take it from a draft to a master you can upload.
