Three platforms. Twelve prompts. One honest verdict for June 2026.
The AI music space has consolidated fast. After the wave of 2024–2025 launches, three names dominate creator conversations in 2026: Suno, Udio, and SoundGen. We spent two weeks putting them through identical workloads. Here's what we found.
The Test
We standardized 12 prompts across genres — lo-fi, drill, cinematic, house, indie folk, ambient, hyperpop, country, jazz fusion, trailer hybrid, kids' music, and a deliberately weird "broken music box in a thunderstorm." Each platform got the same prompt text, same target length (90s), same number of regenerations (3).
Round 1: Pure Generation Quality
- Suno — Cleanest vocals, strongest pop hooks. Still the king of "song that sounds like a song."
- Udio — Best instrumental texture, especially on jazz fusion and ambient. Vocals slightly behind Suno.
- SoundGen — Competitive on instrumentals, voice cloning beats both for your own voice, slightly less polished on default vocal generations.
Verdict: Suno narrowly wins on raw "drop and post to TikTok" quality.
Round 2: What Happens After Generation
This is where the gap opened up.
- Suno — Download the stem bundle, leave the platform, finish in your DAW.
- Udio — Same. Generate, download, leave.
- SoundGen — Drops the generation straight into a multi-track DAW in the browser. Stems already separated. AI auto-mix on the bus. Voice clone ready to add ad-libs. Mastering one click away.
If your workflow ends at "generate," Suno and Udio are great. If your workflow ends at "release," only one of these is a finished pipeline.
Round 3: Iteration Cost
We measured cost-per-finished-track including regenerations.
- Suno Pro — Cheapest per generation, but you pay again every time you tweak.
- Udio Standard — Middle of the pack on cost, premium on stem quality.
- SoundGen — Higher per-generation than Suno, but edits in the DAW are free. Net cost per finished release came out lowest in our test.
Round 4: Rights and Commercial Use
All three offer commercial-use tiers in 2026. SoundGen and Udio give clearer ownership on paid plans; Suno's free tier still carries the loudest restrictions. Read your tier — this changed twice in the last year.
The Honest Verdict (June 2026)
- Pick Suno if you want viral hooks and you don't mix.
- Pick Udio if you're a beat-maker or sound designer who lives in instrumentals.
- Pick SoundGen if you're trying to actually finish, mix, master, and release music — not just generate clips.
The 2026 AI music war isn't about who generates the best 30 seconds anymore. It's about who finishes the song.
What's Next
Watch for full-band stem regeneration ("change just the bass") and live-collab generation rolling out across all three before the end of summer. The benchmark we'll be running in September is going to look very different.
We make one of the three tools compared here, so read this with that in mind. Competitor features and prices are as publicly listed in June 2026 and change often — check each provider's own pricing page before deciding.
